Top 5 Signs Your Dryer Needs Professional Repair

Inside a dryer cabinet — heating element and blower — Spark Appliance Repair, Mountain View CA

A dryer that's "kind of working" is the appliance most people put up with the longest. They run two cycles instead of one, they pull clothes out still damp, they ignore the burning smell. The problem is that some of those tolerated symptoms are actually fire hazards. Here are the five signs to take seriously.

1. Clothes take more than one cycle to dry

This is the classic warning. Either the heating element is failing, the vent run is clogged with lint, or the airflow is blocked somewhere in the system. Lint buildup is the most common cause, and it's also the leading cause of dryer-related house fires. The U.S. Fire Administration counts roughly 2,900 dryer fires every year in the country — most are preventable.

2. Burning or hot-plastic smell

Stop the cycle immediately. A burning smell almost always means either lint inside the cabinet has reached the heating element, the motor bearings are failing, or a drum belt is slipping against a seized roller. Don't run another load until the unit is checked.

3. Loud thumping, squealing, or grinding

Drum bearings, idler pulleys, and rollers wear out — usually somewhere between year 8 and year 12 of normal use. They're a cheap repair if you catch them early. Ignore the noise long enough and the drum can come off its rollers entirely, which turns a $200 repair into a much bigger one.

4. Dryer stops mid-cycle and won't restart for a while

That's almost always the thermal fuse tripping because the unit is overheating. Sometimes it's a one-time event after a vent blockage, but often the fuse is permanently blown. Common on Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, and Samsung units in particular.

5. The drum spins but there's no heat

Heating element, gas valve coils, or thermal cutoff. Easy to diagnose, common to repair, and not something to live with.
